Elizabeth “Bet” Van Lew was born on October 12, 1818 in Richmond, Virginia, to a prominent family with Northern roots. Her mother, Eliza Louise Baker Van Lew, was from Philadelphia, and her father, John Van Lew, from New York. Though her family held slaves and were part of Richmond’s upper class, Elizabeth’s education—especially at a Quaker school in Philadelphia—nurtured a deep anti-slavery sentiment.
