The Love We Never Stopped Choosing

The rain had been falling since afternoon.

Not heavily, not violently—just a soft, endless rain that covered the city in a silver mist. The streets were almost empty, and the yellow lights from the shops reflected on the wet roads like tiny stars.

Arjun stood beneath the old bus-stop shelter, holding a small black umbrella in one hand and a faded photograph in the other.

He had been standing there for almost an hour.

Every few minutes, he looked toward the road.

He knew she might not come.

He knew she probably had no reason to come.

But some part of his heart still believed that if he waited long enough, the past might return.

Her name was Maya.

And once upon a time, she had been everything to him.

"Then I'll take it."

She paid for the book and turned toward the door.

Then she stopped.

"What's your name?"

"Arjun."

"I'm Maya."

"I know."

She looked surprised.

"You know?"

"You wrote it on the payment receipt."

Maya laughed again.

"You're funny, Arjun."

"I wasn't trying to be."

"I like that."

And then she left.

Arjun watched her disappear into the rain.

He didn't know it yet, but that small conversation was going to change his life.
