মিডিয়া কন্ট্রোল, মিডিয়া সাপ্রেশন, প্রোপাগান্ডা, সেন্সরশিপ, স্টেট-কন্ট্রোলড মিডিয়া, মিডিয়া ম্যানিপুলেশন ও ইনফরমেশন হেজেমনি সংবাদসংশ্লিষ্টদের রোজকার চর্চিত শব্দবন্ধ। এসব কি এখন খানিকটা বেশিই চর্চিত হচ্ছে?
প্রথম আলো ও হাসনাত আব্দুল্লাহ্'র দ্বৈরথ দেখে তাই মনে হলো। নিউজ হাপিস হয়ে যাওয়ার মতো ঘটনা অতীতে খুব কম ঘটেছে। অথচ তখনও মিডিয়ায় কড়াকড়ি নিয়ন্ত্রণ আরোপ করত রাষ্ট্রীয় এজেন্সিগুলো। পলিটিক্যাল লিডাররা সংসদে দাঁড়িয়ে গণমাধ্যমের নাম ধরে মিথ্যা বিষোদগার করতেন।
'হাসনাত বিলাসী জীবনযাপন করছেন' -এই নিউজ যদি অসত্য হয়, খুব দ্রুত সংবাদ নির্মাতা সাংবাদিক ও তার উপরস্থ সম্পাদনা বিভাগ কড়া জবাবদিহিতার আওতায় আসবে, দায়িত্ব অবহেলার জন্য কারো কারো চাকরিচ্যুতির ঘটনাও ঘটতে পারে। তা যদি না হয়, ধরে নিতে হবে ডালের মধ্যে কিছুটা কলঙ্ক আছেই।
ব্যবসায়ী, এডভোকেট, চিকিৎসক ছাড়া বাংলাদেশে যারা রাজনীতি করেন তাদের দৃশ্যমান পেশা কী? তাদের নিজের ভরণপোষণ ও সংসার চালাতে হয় না? বিলাসী জীবন বাদ দিলাম, ন্যূনতম জীবনধারণের টাকাটা ওই পলিটিশানরা কোথায় পান? আপনি এক কোটি টাকা নয়ছয় করলেও পাপ, এক টাকা করলেও তাইই। নৈতিকতার কষ্টিপাথরে কোনোটাই জাস্টিফাইড হবে না।
বাংলাদেশের রাজনীতিবিদরা কী করে টাকা কামাই করে সেটা দেখতে ভারতে আশ্রয় নেয়া সাম্প্রতিক সময়ের লীগ পলিটিশানদের দিকে তাকান, আরো ডিটেইলসে গেলে মির্জা আব্বাস কিংবা হাজী সেলিমের কেইস স্টাডি করেন নিমিষে উত্তর পাবেন। তাদের বাপ-দাদারা তাল্লুক রেখে যান নাই, অথচ তাদের কী নাই?
কাজেই হাসনাত আব্দুল্লাহ্'র ক্ষেপে যাওয়ার কিছু নাই।
নিয়মতান্ত্রিকভাবে ডকুমেন্ট সহকারে তিনি প্রতিবাদ জানাতে পারেন, তদানুযায়ী সংবাদমাধ্যম প্রতিবাদলিপি ছাপাতে পারে, ভুল হলে ক্ষমাও চাইতে পারে। কিন্তু চাপ দিয়ে সংবাদ ম্যানিপুলেট করার কোনো সুযোগ নাই। এটা শুদ্ধ তরিকা না। আখেরে এজন্য সকলপক্ষকেই পস্তাতে হতে পারে।
এনসিপি লিডার সারজিস আলম পঞ্চগড় ভ্রমণে এত গাড়িবহর ব্যবহারের সাপোর্ট কোথা থেকে পেয়েছেন সেই বিষয়টি এখনো তার দলীয় ফোরামেই পরিষ্কার করতে পারেন নাই। শোনা যাচ্ছে দলীয় নেতাকর্মীদের প্রশ্নবাণে এখনো জর্জরিত হতে হচ্ছে তাঁকে। এবং এটাই স্বাভাবিক প্রক্রিয়া।
পরিবর্তনের আগে প্রথম আলোর নিউজ যদি সঠিক হয়, ওটা হাসনাতের জন্য অমঙ্গলজনক কিছু না, বরং তাঁর নিজেকে শোধরানোর বড় সুযোগ হিসেবে নেয়া যেতে পারে। ইন্ডিয়ান হেজেমনির বিরুদ্ধে সময়ের বলিষ্ঠ কন্ঠস্বর হাসনাতকে রেগে গেলে চলবে না। তার নিজেই নিজেকে ক্রমাগত জবাবদিহিতার মধ্যে রাখতে হবে। লোকজনের চোখকান এখন খুব বেশি খোলা। তারা কিছুই দেখে না ভাবাটা বিরাট ভুল হবে। কাজেই রেগে গেলেন তো হেরে গেলেন। পলিটিশানদের এক নাম্বার গুণ যেকোনো পরিস্থিতিতে চরমতম স্থৈর্য।

Humility elevates a person!
Media control, media suppression, propaganda, censorship, state-controlled media, media manipulation, and information hegemony—these are everyday buzzwords for those involved in news and journalism. Are these terms now being overused?
That’s what it seemed like after witnessing the confrontation between Prothom Alo and Hasnat Abdullah. Such incidents where news gets suppressed are rare in the past. Yet even then, state agencies imposed strict control over the media. Political leaders would openly vilify specific media outlets on the parliament floor.
If the news “Hasnat lives a luxurious lifestyle” is untrue, the responsible journalist and their editorial supervisors should be held strictly accountable, and some may even lose their jobs for negligence. But if that doesn't happen, one must assume there’s at least a grain of truth in the matter.
Aside from businessmen, advocates, and doctors, what visible professions do politicians in Bangladesh actually have? Don’t they have to support themselves and their families? Leaving luxury aside, where do these politicians get the money even for basic living expenses? Whether you embezzle one crore or one taka—it’s still a sin. Neither can be justified on the moral compass.
If you want to see how Bangladeshi politicians make money, just look at those recent League politicians who took shelter in India. For more detailed analysis, take Mirza Abbas or Haji Selim as case studies—you’ll get your answer instantly. Their ancestors didn’t leave behind estates, yet they seem to lack for nothing.
So, there’s no reason for Hasnat Abdullah to lose his temper. He can protest in a proper, documented manner, and the media can publish his rejoinder accordingly—and even apologize if they were wrong. But manipulating news through pressure is unacceptable. That’s not the right way. In the end, everyone involved may regret it.
Even NCP leader Sarjis Alam has not yet clarified within his own party forum where he got the support for the large motorcade during his Panchagarh visit. Reportedly, he’s still being bombarded with questions from fellow party members. And that’s a healthy democratic process.
If Prothom Alo's news was accurate before the changes, it’s not a disgrace for Hasnat—it could instead be a great opportunity for him to reform himself. As a powerful voice against Indian hegemony, Hasnat cannot afford to lose his temper. He must continuously hold himself accountable. People are more alert and aware than ever. Assuming they see nothing would be a grave mistake. So, if you lose your temper, you lose the game. A politician’s greatest virtue is maintaining utmost composure in any situation.
