Cristiano Ronaldo: Has He Become a Muslim?

Regarded as one of the greatest football players in history, Cristiano Ronaldo has continuously drawn attention from around the world for his personal life and beliefs in addition to his record-breaking athletic achievements, which include leading teams to victory in prestigious tournaments and winning multiple Ballon d'Or awards. The Portuguese superstar's conversion to Islam has been the subject of recent rumors. Let's examine the facts and distinguish fact from fiction.

Expressions of Respect for Islam

Ronaldo, currently a player for Al-Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia, has been open in the past about his respect for Islamic traditions and his Muslim teammates. In 2023, he relocated to Saudi Arabia, where he became acquainted with a society steeped in Islamic traditions. Videos and images of Ronaldo taking part in what many view as respectful behavior — including performing the “sujood,” or gesture of prostration typically associated with Islamic prayer, after goals — have drawn admiration from Muslim fans and piqued the interest of others around the world, with many praising his cultural sensitivity.

I'd say I knew before anyone that it was a Waleed Abdullah interview, which was mentioned in text this morning, and it was during a recent, during his time with the Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, and in that previous interview he said his friends and teammates spoke about Islam, and Ronaldo was curious, I do believe there was more support for his friends, during the Holy Month of Ramadan, and finding ways that Ramadan would sympathize, so he really wanted to make sure that they were okay with -- if I have a scheduled training session to around looking out for them. Such gestures have strengthened the impression that Ronaldo is open-minded and respectful to Islam.

The Viral Misrepresentations

But multiple claims that Ronaldo had converted to Islam have been debunked by reliable sources. One video, which went viral in 2024, that claimed to show Ronaldo reading the Quran was of a lookalike, not the footballer himself. This was validated by multiple respected fact-checking organizations, including Reuters.

In a similar vein, claims circulating online that Ronaldo has converted to Islam cannot be substantiated. While Ronaldo has not made any public statements about adopting the faith, his actions indicate a deep respect for Islamic customs.

Ronaldo’s Personal Beliefs

It is widely known that Ronaldo has always preferred to remain discreet regarding his religious beliefs. Having been brought up in a Catholic family, he has at times shown the gestures of his faith by using a crucifix necklace in interviews or crossing himself before important events in a match, which demonstrates the way he relates to his religion. This also explains how he is able to appreciate and recognize different cultures and religion.

Finally

At the moment, there is nothing indicating that Cristiano Ronaldo has indeed officially joined the Islamic faith. He certainly does actions that indicate overwhelming appreciation towards this religion and its believers, but regarding the claims of him being a member it is a stretch. However, one thing is certain, Ronaldo is still a beacon of hope that is a walking example of unity, understanding through cultural tolerance that has no religion.

Ronaldo’s choosing to embrace Islam or not, never takes away from the fact that he has respect for the beliefs and its traditions all which showcase his character and the ability to build up rather than divide, setting a standard of oneness and respect for his audience. Such actions prove the case that lack of respect for one another leads to the loss of harmony even more in a cohesive global village.
