A good story is not always waiting in an obvious place. Sometimes it begins with a small observation, a conversation or a question that nobody has asked clearly enough.
For a reporter, finding a story means paying attention to what is happening around them. A crowded road, a sudden change in a local community, a workplace dispute, a public complaint or an unusual event can all contain the beginning of a report.
The first question should not always be, “Is this a big story?” A better question is, “Why does this matter?”
Reporters should learn to look for people who are affected by an event, documents that explain what happened and sources who can provide different perspectives. A single claim is rarely enough to build a complete report.
Curiosity is one of the most useful qualities in journalism. When something seems unusual, the reporter should look into it carefully instead of simply accepting the first explanation.
Finding a story also requires patience. Some stories develop slowly. A reporter may need several conversations before understanding what is really happening.
The strongest stories often come from ordinary situations that have not yet received enough attention.
A reporter should also learn to distinguish between something that is merely interesting and something that is genuinely important to the public. Relevance, impact, evidence and the experiences of affected people can help determine whether an idea deserves further reporting.
Sometimes the most valuable story is not the loudest one. It may be the quiet story of a family, worker, student, community or individual whose experience reveals a larger issue.
Journalism begins when a reporter notices something, asks a question and decides to find the answer.
