Voting & Points

Voting is how the community rewards good content — and it directly affects points for authors.

How voting works

Every post and every comment has up (▲) and down (▼) arrows.

  • Upvote — "this is good and helpful"
  • Downvote — "this is low quality or off-topic"

You can't vote on your own posts or comments. You can change your vote at any time by clicking the other arrow.

Points for authors

When you write a post, other people's votes change your points:

Someone upvotes your post +10
Someone downvotes your post −5
Someone switches their upvote to a downvote −15
Someone switches their downvote to an upvote +15

Downvoting costs the voter

To keep the community fair, downvoting a post costs the voter 2 points. It's a small "responsibility" cost so downvotes are used thoughtfully, not carelessly. If you switch your downvote back to an upvote, the 2 points are refunded.

Switching works exactly as you'd expect: changing up→down reverses the +10 the author got and applies the −5 (net −15); changing down→up does the reverse (net +15).

There's a short delay

Votes settle after a few minutes. When you click an arrow, the count changes instantly, but the points, notifications, and achievements are applied a few minutes later — once your vote has "settled". This means:

  • Rapidly toggling up/down/up doesn't spam the author with notifications.
  • Only your final vote counts for points.
  • Achievement counters reflect real votes, not clicks.

So don't worry if the author's points don't change the instant you click — it's the system working as designed.

What votes mean for the author

  • Upvotes are the main signal of quality — they drive points and the Helpful / Inspiring / Epic achievements.
  • Downvotes are rare and deliberate. Use them only for content that really doesn't belong.

Your voting achievements

Voting (upvoting) earns you achievements too:

  • First Upvote — your first upvote
  • Generous — 100 upvotes given
  • Patron Saint — 500 upvotes given (secret badge!)

Like points, these count settled votes — toggling back and forth doesn't inflate your progress.
